Kathryn Tringale is a Clinical Neurotechnology Research Assistant in the Department of Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital. Kathryn is responsible for collecting primary research data by running sessions with participants enrolled in the BrainGate clinical trial. She joined the BrainGate team in the fall of 2010 as an undergraduate Biomedical Engineering student at Brown University. She was awarded the Karen T. Romer Undergraduate Teaching and Research Award to conduct research in the field of communication for people with paralysis using neural interfaces. Her research under Leigh Hochberg, M.D., Ph.D. culminated in her Honors Biomedical Engineering thesis, which was awarded the Domenico A. Ionada Fund for her demonstration of creativity and imagination in an independent project. Kathryn received her ScB in Biomedical Engineering from Brown University in May 2012, graduating with Honors and as a member of the Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Xi honor societies. She plans to attend medical school to continue studying and researching neurology and biomedical technology. Admission to Degree Program: Admission to the M.S.B.M.E. is a two-step process. First, the prospective student must be admitted to graduate standing by the University of Arkansas Graduate School (see "The Graduate School: Objectives, Regulations, Degrees" in this catalog or visit for details). Second, the student must be admitted to the Department of Biomedical Engineering on the basis of academic transcripts, standardized test scores, three letters of recommendation and a statement of purpose. Students with a non-engineering degree or a non-ABET-accredited engineering degree must demonstrate completion of the basic Engineering Education Requirements prior to being admitted. Students who carry out undergraduate research are encouraged to focus their work toward a biomedical engineering senior thesis.This course provides biomedical engineering students with an opportunity to observe basic operative and postoperative procedures with the idea of both learning about such procedures and identifying the role of biomedical engineering in these clinical settings.
