Thesis Statements - Indiana University

A thesis statement is a sentence (or sentences) that expresses the main ideas of your paper and answers the question or questions posed by your paper. It offers your readers a quick and easy to follow summary of what the paper will be discussing and what you as a writer are setting out to tell them. The kind of thesis that your paper will have will depend on the purpose of your writing. This handout will cover general thesis statement tips, explain some of the different types of thesis statements, and provide some links to other resources about writing thesis statements.

General Thesis Statement THESIS STATEMENTS What is a thesis? The thesis statement is one of the (if not the) most important parts of your paper.

A good thesis statement will not contain specific details, but it should not feel too general either. Finding a balance may seem tricky, but with some refining, your thesis will come together. In looking at a general thesis statement, you need to give the reader enough information to see the potential argument on the topic. For example, you do not want to say, “People go hungry without food to eat.” This is not a thesis, but rather a general fact that does not help the reader understand the position you will take on the topic. When looking at specifics, you need to make an argument for your topic without giving the supporting arguments or details that you will use in the body of your paragraph. An overly specific thesis may give data or other research instead of giving your take on the subject.
