The story can be seen as a tale of the boys regressing in a non-civilised society, or it can be seen to represent something else that continues to tell a story about life at the time and offers a more in-depth view of the island and the children on it. Throughout the story, symbolism is used to give the reader more of an insight into what is going on. Every detail is significant to the progression of the story. The island on which the children are stranded is a microcosm for the world. The children are the population. They make up the different leaders, and the littluns are the followers. The conch is the thing that brings everyone together. It is a sign of peace and democracy. Although, as the group starts to divide, Piggy becomes the only one believing in the conch's power, because he knows that without it, no one would take him seriously.
